The two oldest international football teams in the world are England and Scotland, and unsurprisingly the first ever international football match was played between these two teams. Played in Scotland, the match ended in a 0-0 draw and England and Scotland have been fierce rivals ever since.
Wembley Stadium - Home of English Football
England had no permanent stadium for their home fixtures until 1924 when Wembley Stadium was opened. This classic sporting venue was witness to many famous domestic games, internationals and FA Cup Finals. The most famous football match of all was staged at Wembley in July 1966 when England were crowned World Champions after beating West Germany 4-2 in the Football World Cup Final.
The last match at the old Wembley Stadium was against Germany on 7th October 2000 with Germany winning this one 1-0. England finally returned to Wembley in 2007 when the new and spectacular stadium was opened.
Classic Footballing Moments
Despite only winning the World Cup once, the England football team have been involved in many classic matches and historic moments in international football, such as the 5-1 victory on German soil in the 2001 World Cup qualifier, Michael Owen's wonder goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup and the world famous Gordon Banks' save in the match against Brazil in 1970.
