Description

It was the end of a 73 yearlong wait. "Liverpool Vs Leeds United 1965 FA Cup Final" is the complete story of the day that The Reds finally took the cup home to Merseyside.

"You should be prepared to die for them". Those were Bill Shankly's immortal words, when talking about the loyal Anfield faithful, whilst addressing his players in the Wembley dressing room. Perhaps it was that rallying cry that made the difference in what was destined to be a very tight and tense affair.

Leeds United had had a better season than Liverpool in the league, but there was an optimism and belief amongst players and fans that the FA Cup hoodoo was about to be overcome at last. Following 73 years of heartache and disappointment, the Liverpool team were heroic; none more so than Gerry Byrne, who sustained an horrific collarbone injury within the first ten minutes of the match and yet, remarkably, played on, unaware of the full extent of the damage. As predicted the game was fiercely contested and perhaps inevitably went to -time following a goalless 90 minutes. The final sprang into life soon after and Liverpool took the lead through Roger Hunt, converting with his head from a Byrne cross. A Billy Bremner volley brought Leeds back in to the game soon after, but Liverpool replied with another headed goal, this time from Ian St. John, to claim the treasured trophy at last.

Liverpool fans will simply love this souvenir DVD of a great day in the club's history, when The Reds won the FA Cup against Leeds United after a 73-year wait in 1965.
