Both Arsenal and Manchester United were Wembley regulars in the 1970s and both teams had been the victims of FA Cup Final upsets in recent years, United losing out to Southampton in 1976 and Arsenal to Ipswich in 1978. This proved to be a battle royal between two of the country's top teams that was only decided with virtually the last kick of the game.
For most of the 1979 FA Cup Final, Arsenal Football Club was cruising. The Gunners had taken a comfortable 2-0 lead with goals from Brian Talbot and Frank Stapleton and looked in control of the match. That remained the story until the 85th minute. An unlikely Manchester United goal scorer, Gordon McQueen, popped up to grab United a lifeline with the minutes passing by and then dramatically Sammy McIlroy prodded an equaliser under Pat Jennings with two minutes left. Extra-time loomed. But not in the mind of the brilliant Liam Brady, who despite fatigue and the disappointment of seeing a 2-0 led pegged back, skilfully wove his way through the United defence to cross for Alan Sunderland to stab home a memorable winner.
