On Sunday 29th April, City old boy Clinton Morrison scored the first goal in Crystal Palace's 2-0 win over Derby County. That win meant that Derby, with one game remaining, couldn't now catch Birmingham City and promotion back to the Premier League was assured.
The day before, Blues played Sheffield Wednesday at St Andrews in a tense affair which many, considering the final game of the season was away to play off seeking Preston, saw as a must-win game. Fabrice Muamba was sent off to heighten the tension, but two late goals by Cameron Jerome and Sebastian Larsson sealed a 2-0 win.
At the start of the season expectations were very high. When form dipped slightly and results weren't going as desired, especially following the home defeat by Norwich, many fans and presenters on local phone ins were calling for Steve Bruce to be sacked.
However, Bruce was backed by his board, both verbally and financially, and results were ground out. Despite a terrible Easter period Blues then won four games on the trot, including that classic 3-2 win at Molineux, and that was ultimately sufficient to guarantee promotion back to the Premier League.
