Ipswich Town Football Club was founded in 1878 but not elected to the Football League until 1938.
In August 1955 a certain Alf Ramsey joined as manager. He took Ipswich from Division Three (South) as Champions into Division Two, from where they gained another promotion into the top flight. Amazingly, at their first attempt they were crowned as Division One Champions in 1960/61. Of course, Alf Ramsey then led England to a successful World Cup campaign in 1966, after which he received his knighthood.
The Bobby Robson Era
In January 1969 another now famous manager took charge - Sir Bobby Robson. Under Robson Ipswich Town won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, as well as regularly finishing highly in the League. Like Ramsey, Bobby Robson left to manage the England national side.
That memorable 1978 FA Cup Final victory over Arsenal is still available to buy on DVD.
