Jermaine Pennant could have scored, Steven Gerrard came close and John Arne Riise always threatened, but in the end a hugely fortuitous deflection cost Liverpool dearly as the Merseyside giants went down by 2 goals to 1 against the Italians who weren’t even in the competition to start with.
The final against AC Milan was the conclusion of another epic season for The Reds, a year in which they triumphed over Barcelona in the Nou Camp with Riise and golf buddy Craig Bellamy scoring and defeated Chelsea twice at Anfield.
Domestically, the team stuttered, especially in the cups against Arsenal, although Champions League qualification was pretty much assured as early as the turn of the year.
