An FA Cup triumph had looked nigh impossible in January 1998. Already trailing in the league by a dozen points, Arsenal had failed to beat lowly Port Vale at home in the third round. But Wenger is a shrewd manager and the team showed a dramatic upturn in form after the replay win at Port Vale. Victory over Wolves in the semi-final at Villa Park placed Arsenal in another Wembley showdown. Despite having lost to Newcastle in 2 previous finals, back in 1932 and 1952, Arsenal was always in control in 1998. Dutchman Marc Overmars put The Gunners ahead converting an Emmanuel Petit pass and despite The Magpies rallying in the second period, it was Frenchman Nicolas Anelka who ensured that the cup, along with the league, would belong to Arsenal.
