There have been a few memorable David and Goliath encounters in FA Cup history. The 1964 final will be another that goes down in the record books, as the all-conquering Hammers took on Second Division Preston North End.
It was an era that saw the legendary Bobby Moore complete an unprecedented hat trick of Wembley wins, culminating in the 1966 World Cup Final and the defeat of West Germany by 4 goals to 2. In the 1964 FA Cup Final, Preston, the underdogs, began well and with the young Howard Kendall heavily involved, took the lead through Doug Holden. Another teenager, Hammers' John Sissons, quickly drew West Ham level, only for Preston to regain the advantage just on half time. It was England's hero Geoff Hurst that equalised again, with a towering header that came back off of the goalkeeper and the match seemed to be heading for time. Ronnie Boyce had other ideas however and in stoppage time nipped in at the back post to nod home the winner. It was an amazing end to an incredible game.
