There have been many famous players to wear the red and white stripes including Geoff Hurst, Alan Hudson, record goal scorer John Ritchie and the two goalkeeping legends Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton. Yet Stoke City's most famous player was Stanley Matthews. Matthews played in two spells for the Potters from 1932-47 and 1961-65, with an FA Cup winning period with Blackpool in between. He also starred for England between 1934 and 1957, amazingly playing international football in his 40s.

Despite the longevity of their history, and being one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888, Stoke City have only won one major trophy - the 1972 League Cup Final, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.
