Everybody who likes sport loves a David and Goliath story. The all-conquering Leeds United team, defenders of the trophy and already through to the European Cup Winners Cup Final, faced second division Sunderland. There could only be one outcome. Couldn't there?
There are normally two things needed to produce a shock of this magnitude. Firstly, the underdog has to perform heroically and second you need that little bit of Lady Luck to be on your side. Miraculously, Sunderland didn't really need that second component; such were the unbelievably brave performances from each and every member of the team that day. The Black Cats Manager, Bob Stokoe, got his strategy and tactics absolutely spot on, defending manfully and not giving Leeds an inch of space to play. The two moments that will never be forgotten not just by Sunderland fans, but by anybody who watched that day, were Ian Porterfield's cracking volley and Jim Montgomery's 'impossible' double save. Even as you replay the action now, the ball seems destined to ripple the back of the net. Regaining his feet after an initial save from Trevor Cherry and straining every sinew in each finger, Montgomery somehow deflected Peter Lorimer's goal-bound follow-up wide of the target.
