The FIFA World Cup is the showcase tournament of the world's 'beautiful game'. It was first held in 1930 in Uruguay, with the hosts beating Argentina 4-2 in the Final.
Italy then won the next two World Cups, both on European soil in 1934 and 1938. After the war in 1950, Uruguay regained the Jules Rimet Trophy, this time in Brazil.
World Cup Legends Brazil
Arguably the best and most famous international football team in the world are Brazil. The South American greats finally won the World Cup in 1958 and retained the trophy in 1962. But, on English soil in 1966, Brazil couldn't make it three in a row. Instead England beat West Germany 4-2 in the final at Wembley.
Four years later the 1970 Football World Cup tournament took place in Mexico. Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in the final and qualified to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy. The performance of Brazil throughout these finals is regarded as the finest display of football ever; hardly surprising when you consider that legendary Brazilian football team contained captain Carlos Alberto, Jairzinho, Tostão, Gérson, Rivelino and, of course, Pelé.
FIFA World Cup Final DVDs
The hosts of the Football World Cup were traditionally from either South American of European nations, but this changed in 1994 when the Finals were held in the United States and in 2002 when South Korea and Japan jointly hosted the FIFA World Cup. Brazil won both of these tournaments. The 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals are set to be held in South Africa.
To date, Brazil are the most successful team having won the World Cup 5 times, Italy are next with 4 triumphs, and West Germany follow having won it on 3 occasions.
