This is a superb black t-shirt paying tribute to the legendary Brian Clough.
The text on the t-shirt is a famous Cloughie quote and reads as follows: I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one.
Brian Clough was born on 21st March 1935, in Middlesbrough, and died on 20th September 2004. He was an exceptionally prolific striker and amazingly almost scored a goal a game for Middlesbrough and Sunderland but his football playing career was cut short through injury. And so started a remarkable managerial career, starting with Hartlepool and followed by Derby County, Brighton, Leeds United and finally Nottingham Forest.
Cloughie managed Derby County from 1967-1973. He won the Second Division (as it was then) with Derby County in 1968/69 and after promotion to the top flight won the First Division championship in 1971/72 for the first time in Derby's history, just pipping Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester City by a single point. This was followed by a further Division One championship title in 1974/75.
After brief managerial spells at Brighton and Leeds United Brian Clough became manager at Second Division Nottingham Forest in January 1975; it was the start of an incredible journey. In his first full season in charge Cloughie lead Forest to promotion to the top flight (Division One) and amazingly clinched the title the very next season (Forest had therefore qualified for the European Cup for the first time in their history), as well as the League Cup. The team then retained the League Cup, finished as runners-up to Liverpool in Division One and against all expectation won the European Cup! It was a feat which was repeated the very next season, beating Hamburg in the Final! Cloughie final left Nottingham Forest in 1993, having won 2 European Cups, 1 Division One League title, and 4 League Cups. It had been an unprecedented chapter in the history of Nottingham Forest FC.
Old Big 'Ead had made such a huge impact on the game of football both through his sucesses, in terms of trophies, and his larger than life personality, which lead to so many memorable quotes. Cloughie was a true football legend.
