When the draw was made for the 2008 UEFA Championships was made the Scottish football team were more or less written off from the start. However, the qualifying campaign turned out to be an amazing journey and this official DVD Scotland Euro 2008 Campaign - Yesterday Europe Tomorrow the World relives that heroic effort.
In a group which included current World Champions, Italy, World Cup runners up, France, and the formidable team from Ukraine, Scotland had little chance of making any impact within Qualifying Group B. However, the Tartan Army had something to sing about once again, as Scotland romped through their qualifying group beating Lithuania, Ukraine, Faroe Islands, Georgia and the mighty France – twice! Walter Smith had brought the team on leaps and bounds from 2004 and Alex McLeish has carried on the good work.
Amazingly the campaign culminated in a nail biting match versus Italy at Hampden on 17 November 2007. The whole of Scotland was behind the team with optimism at an all time high. The country ground to a standstill as the game played, the fans shouted themselves hoarse with “Flower of Scotland”. Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way, but the majority of the crowd stayed on at the end to salute their heroes as they did a lap of honour. No matter - we’re back, we’re ready to try for the World Cup 2010, we are a Nation reborn!
