Prior to kick-off, Giggs had been introduced for his 758th United appearance, equalling the milestone set by Sir Bobby Charlton.

The game ended 1-1 after extra time and the game went into a dreaded penalty shoot out. After 9 penalties John Terry had the opportuntiy to win the Champions League for Chelsea - he slipped and his sho hit the post and went wide. Ryan Giggs, a late United substitute scored the next penalty. Then Edwin van der Sar saved from Nicolas Anelka and Manchester United were winners of the 2008 Champions League, 50 years after the Munich tragedy.
