It really was an incredible and historic season for all Baggies fans. After the heartache of the 2007 play off final, Tony Mowbray cleared out the individual stars and assembled a new squad full of skill, technical ability and spirit. Throughout the season it was evident that new Hawthorns Heroes, such as Robert Koren, Andrade Filipe Teixeira, Leon Barnett, Ishmael Miller and Roman Bednar, were emerging.
In the Championship Albion were in the top 6 for most of the 2007/08 season but could we clinch an automatic spot and avoid the lottery of the play offs? The 2007/08 season saw Tony Mowbray stick to his principals of attractive, open attacking football, at times breath-taking to watch as we destroyed the opposition with movement, passing, speed, and countless goals - sometimes spectacular. Albion could never quite clinch an automatic promotion slot and things were complicated by a tremedous FA Cup run, ending in an unlucky semi final defeat at Wembley against our old mates Portsmouth. The Cup defeat only served to galvanise the squad and Albion finished the season on a 9 game unbeaten run to be crowned as 2007/08 Championship winners at QPR in front of a crowd full of 'Super Heroes', including Tesco Man, in recognition of Kevin 'Super Kev' Phillips' phenomenal goal scoring record.
