The 2007 F1 Championship was dominated by the two teams of Ferrari and McLaren-Mercedes and their respective drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, and Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. The season commenced with the Australian Grand Prix, won by Raikkonen. But McLaren-Mercedes hit back with Alonso’s victory in the second GP in Malaysia. However, it was a young driver, Lewis Hamilton, in his first Formula One season who began to take the headlines. Hamilton won back-to-back GPs in Canada and United States, and there was a real possibility that the rookie driver might make history and win the Drivers’ Championship.
Lewis Hamilton also won the Hungarian and Japanese GPs, and went into the final race of the season at the head of the Drivers’ Championship. After problems with his car, Hamilton could only finish in seventh place. Alonso ended in third and Kimi Raikkonen won the Brazilian Grand Prix to clinch the Championship by a single point – it was that close!

Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) 110 pts
Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes) 109 pts
Fernando Alonso (McLaren-Mercedes) 109 pts
Add into the mix a ‘spy scandal’ which saw McLaren-Mercedes stripped of all their Constructors’ points, rumours of a rift between team-mates Alonso and Hamilton and, of course, thrilling racing – it really was one of the most exciting and controversial Formula seasons ever.
