The roots of rallying can be traced back to 1984 in France as a race between two cities. This form of motorsport quickly spread across France and the rest of Europe and nowadays takes place across the world. Arguably the most famous rally of all is the Monte Carlo Rally, which is now part of the World Rally Championship.
In Britain there is the annual British Rally Championship which attracts up and coming drivers from the UK, Ireland and Europe. The championship stretches across six rounds, one of which is part of the World Rally Championship.
The British Rally Championship
The most famous rally in Britain is the Wales Rally GB. It was first staged in 1932, as the RAC Rally, finished in Torquay, and Colonel AH Loughborough ended with the lowest number of penalty points. In 1998 the rally changed its name to the Network Q Rally of Great Britain and in 2003 became the Wales Rally of Great Britain. Recent winners have included Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Robert Reid, Marcus Grönholm, Timo Rautiainen Petter Solberg and Phil Mills.
