Speedway can trace its origins back to the 1920s and is now administered internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM).

Speedway History

The first speedway meeting in England is very much open to debate. Camberley and Droylsden both claim to have held meetings in 1927; the Camberley one being a clockwise dirt track event. However, it is generally accepted that the sport was more formally introduced by Australians Billy Galloway and Keith McKay at High Beech on 19th February, 1928. The third meeting here on 9 April 1928 featured bikes with no brakes and broadsiding round corners on loose dirt, where Colin Watson, Alf Medcalf and 'Digger' Pugh demonstrated the art for the first time in Britain.

Speedway may have taken place first of all in either Australia or the United States prior to the Great War. But, one of the first Speedway meetings was reported in the Maitland Mercury newspaper on 17 December 1923 and took place on 15 December 1923 at Maitland Showground in the Lower Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.

Speedway Today

Speedway in Europe is particularly prevalent in the UK, Sweden, Poland and Denmark, where there are several organised Leagues. In the UK there are the Elite, Premier and Conference League. Speedway is also enjoyed to a lesser extent in Argentina, Australia, Czech Republic, Italy, Russia, Slovenia and the USA.

Speedway DVDs

Speedway DVDs are not widely available in the UK but we stock a small range sourced from our mainstream suppliers and producers. We are constantly looking to expand our range of Speedway DVDs and would welcome approaches from any such production companies.
