The SBK World Superbike Championship has been running since 1988, when American Fred Merkel took the title, riding a Honda. In fact, Merkel repeated his triumph the following year. More recent winners have included Carl Fogarty, Colin Edwards, Troy Bayliss and James Toseland.

Each World Superbike Championship is run over the best part of a calendar year, with a race usually taking place every two or three weeks.
