Ice Skating - or to be more precise - Figure Skating, was mainly brought to attention of the British public by 'home' competitors in the Winter Olympics.

The first of these was John Curry when, at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, he won the gold medal in Figure Skating. Later that year Curry was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Then just four years later at the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, Britain again won the gold medal at Figure Skating thanks to the brilliant performances of Robin Cousins.

At the following 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the ice dancing gold. It was an historic occasion as the pair became the highest scoring figure skaters of all time when they received 12 perfect 6.0s from the judges for their performance to Ravel's Boléro.

Torvill and Dean turned professional later in 1984 and went on to perform ice shows to enthusiastic audiences, including the fairy tale 'Fire and Ice'.
