JPR Williams (for the record: John Peter Rhys) was born on 2nd March 1949, in Cardiff.
His international career for Wales spanned from 1969 to 1981 where he made his mark as a world class full back; arguably the greatest ever. JPR possessed virtually every rugby skill: he had great speed, immense skill, could weave past opponents, was ferocious in the tackle, an astute kicker and an intelligent reader of the game. JPR's natural sporting ability was also reflected in him winning a British junior tennis competition.
Welsh Rugby's Finest
Williams was a key member of that brilliant Welsh team of the 70s and played a major part in their Grand Slams of 1971, 1976 and 1978, as well as other Five Nations championships. He was aged 19 when he gained his first full Welsh cap and went on to earn 55 in all.
JPR also won eight caps for the British Lions and was outstanding in the successful tours to New Zealand and South Africa in 1971 and 1974 respectively.
