The Welsh Rugby Union was formed in 1880 and organised its first ever international match against England on 19th February 1881. Despite losing to England the Welsh team quickly developed into a major force in international rugby and, in 1893 Wales became British Home Nations champions for the first time.
Welsh Rugby's Golden Era
In the middle of what was the first 'Golden Age' for Welsh Rugby, Wales famously became the only 'Home Nation' to beat the touring All Blacks in 1905. That was eclipsed by the great Welsh teams of the 1960s and 1970s, which at their peak were arguably the greatest ever rugby side. In the 1960s Wales won the Five Nations in 1964 (jointly with Scotland), 1965, 1966 and 1969. During the 1970s Wales won the Five Nations in 1970 (jointly with France), 1971, 1973 (shared jointly with all 5 nations), 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1979. Wales achieved the Grand Slam in 1971, 1976 and 1978.
Great Welsh Rugby Players
It was immensely exciting, expansive rugby conjured up by many of the game's greatest ever players, such as Barry John, Phil Bennett, Gareth Edwards, JPR Williams, Gerald Davies and Mervyn Davies. All of this was played in the back drop of Cardiff Arms Park. Other legendary players and coaches of the Welsh rugby team include Gwyn Nicholls, Carwyn James, Cliff Morgan, Clive Rowlands and John Dawes.
The Cardiff Millennium Stadium
In 1999 the Welsh rugby team moved from the Arms Park to the impressive Millennium Stadium, which hosted the 1999 Rugby World Cup Final. In this new era the Welsh team clinched the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2005.
Fortunately for Welsh Rugby fans much of the brilliant rugby from the 1970s is available to relive on DVD, as well as highlights and tries from more recent successes.
