Portsmouth Football Club was founded in 1898 and played initially in the Southern League. The first ever league game at Fratton Park was against fierce local rivals Southampton. Now established in the Premier League, supporters of the club can enjoy a selection of Pompey DVDs featuring highlights of many great games.
Portsmouth FC were promoted to the Third Division from the Southern League in 1919/20 and having won the League in 1923/24 found themselves in the Second Division. The success continued and, after finishing as Second Division runners up in 1926/27, Portsmouth were in the top flight for the first time. After losing two FA Cup Finals in 1929 and 1934, Pompey finally won a piece of major silverware when they beat Wolves 4-1 in the 1939 FA Cup Final.
Even more success was around the corner. In the golden jubilee season of 1948/49, Portsmouth won the First Division title and retained their title in the following season. However, it was downhill after that and Pompey found themselves in the Third Division by 1961 and, after financial problems, hit the depths of the Fourth Division in 1978.
Since then things have steadily improved and, following more financial difficulties as well as going into administration, the club was taken over by Milan Mandaric in 1999. With Harry Redknapp in charge, Portsmouth clinched the 2002/2003 First Division title and gained promotion to the Premier League.
Action from Portsmouth Football Club's league and cup success is available for fans to savour with a range of books and Pompey season review DVDs from the Sky Sports DVD Shop.
